Threads like this, or at least some of the comments made in them, should be pinned right under threads commemorating the likes of Eddie B.

I have two mates like this - one is an alcoholic who, over the past couple of years, has finally accepted this and will reach out when he’s struggling and drinking too much again
The other has been in lockdown with three young children driving him mental!
But not in one WhatsApp group!

I've never had mates come to me, but the wife of a good friend said that he was depressed and she hoped that I'd make an effort to see him a bit more. I regret that I didn't really make an effort at the time, although I see a lot more of him now.
He's obviously more of a class act than I am, because he drove a long way and turned up unannounced at my dad's wake, which meant a lot to me.

The trouble with mates is that they're people.

I have been getting that and I totally get your stance on it, shows you think about who gets your time and how. Sensible.
On the flip side, I am lucky to be working, lucky to be healthy and lucky to be living near countryside. So if I can pay it forward to mates and good people, without it costing me too much,
I organise a zoom call with others so I don't end up 1:1 and we have a beer or two, put up some memories and plan some days out in the future.
That way I can chip in as much as I can but keep my own 'energy' protected.

Nah was wondering if anyone has the same problems haller, wasn’t asking for support. It seems they don’t so my circumstances must be unique

The irony that you have come on to this site to ask for support in dealing with friends that are asking for support? Or am I missing the point. A text takes 2 minutes just like a post on here. Take a moment to text ur mates with problems. You will regret it if u don't.

The last one was a joke, I don’t know anyone with bad aids. Only good aids

Cancer, suicide, covid death, bad aids, among other things, it’s not like they’re being soft
I’ve reasoned that when shit happens normally most folk get the chance to talk it over with someone in the pub etc, with lockdown that doesn’t happen so all people can do is send messages to old pals

Your mates are clearly homosexuals. It's the only possible explanation.

Is there someone universally recognised as not bat shit mental that we can compare ourselves with?
I don’t think I’m doing too badly as I’ve always maintained that I’m far too shallow to suffer from mental illness.
It’s what deep thinkers seem to suffer from.
I’m more of a oh, the sun’s out, that’s nice, ooh look, a bird type of person.

I miss the pub and going cricket, but other than that I'm a massive fan of lockdown and not having to go to the office.
Probably similar with my mates. Miss the laughs had with pals, but don't think any of them are struggling as such.
All in our 40's, so as said a generation who aren't overly mincey and woke.

My generation don't tend to ask each other advice on emotional or personal problems.
A good example is I was best man at my mates wedding, 30 years back. A year to the day later he called me and asked what I was up to that evening. Knowing it was his 1st anniversary I joked "Why, has Emma left you"?
"Yeah", was his reply. He never spoke of her again and I never asked.
I think it's great that younger generations are changing this anal attitude As Beatie used to say, "it's good to talk".
